Canadian children are increasingly overweight and that spells trouble for the country’s medical system, Health Minister Anne McLellan cautioned parents in April 2002. She wants kids to get off the couch. Dr. Claire LeBlanc, who heads the Canadian Paediatric Society’s committee on healthy, active living, agrees, stating that fully half of Canadian children are not active enough to achieve optimal growth and development. Lack of exercise in childhood can contribute to cardiovascular, diabetic and bone problems later in life.

Girls on the Move uses dynamic illustrations and descriptive text to encourage girls to lead more healthy, active lifestyles. Along with examples of fun ways girls can be more physically active, it features inspirational examples of Canadian female athletes: Sandra Schmirler (curling), Hayley Wickenheiser (ice hockey), Silken Laumann (rowing), Julie Foster (rugby), Kendra Ohama (wheelchair basketball) and Catriona LeMay Doan (speed skating). Also includes helpful suggestions for parents and caregivers to encourage girls to participate in active, healthy living.
