Dalit (Untouchables) predicament as minorities needs to be understood if one desires to understand Indian politics. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar provides both the normative framework and a perceptive sociological analysis of the predicament of one of the largest excluded segment of population across the globe. As the chairman of the Indian constitution, he proposed an idea of equality which is deeply sensitive to the complex differences rampant in India. This book argues that Ambedkar had a distinct and coherent understanding of the term ?Minority?. He urges us to expand the notion of minority to include oppressed groups along with other kinds of minorities. He was prescient enough to show the limitations of liberal democracy when it comes to protecting the interests of minorities and how to overcome them. The book locates him within the contemporary debates over cultural recognition and criticizes them for ignoring the complexities that dalits have in relation to culture. Cultural recognition for stigmatized groups is a multifarious problem and it is not merely about securing cultural rights.
